“We’re making great progress.”
De Rode Winkel has been located at Lange Elisabethstraat 13 in Utrecht for many years, and you can’t walk through the city without spotting their well-known tote bag. Together with his brother and sister, they represent the new generation of this family business. We visited Daan Broekman of De Rode Winkel.
How are you doing, Daan?
“Yes, things are going well. We’re really busy, both privately and professionally. We’re making great progress. We’re working on the new collection, and we’re fully engaged in a renovation. We’re renovating the building of Thom Broekman, across from De Rode Winkel. Only the exterior wall is still standing — the rest is gone. In a year there will be a new store with fourteen sustainable apartments above it. It’s the biggest investment our family business has ever made. They’ve already been demolishing for six months. We’re right in the city center, so you have to deal with specific challenges, like electricity, removing debris — recently there were twenty-five small containers, because large trucks aren’t allowed into the city.”
Is De Rode Winkel itself doing well too?
“Yes, I’m very happy with all the developments. I have enough staff. Last year we hired a marketing team and started working with email flows, and our webshop continues to perform well.”
Would you like to know why Daan believes customer service is so important, what the tailor service adds to that, and which pair of jeans he prefers to sleep in?
